Cursive handwriting is a style of joined up handwriting in which the letters are connected to help you
write faster. This is as an alternative to block-letters, in which the pen lifts between every letter.
Learning cursive handwriting is important for spelling skills, enabling children to recognize words
when they read them later. Typing doesn't have the same effect on the brain, as it doesn't require
the same fine motor skills and simultaneous activity.
Can 8 year olds write?
Children of this age are trying their best to write clearly in a straight line.
They should know to write from left to right across a page and will attempt to form
letters of a uniform size
Children are not usually introduced to joined-up, or cursive, script until the age of eight.
The National Curriculum Council, along with a gathering group of researchers, favours change.
Its new proposals for English, being considered by ministers, say children should be
joining letters by the age of six to seven
